In a nutshell
1What it does and how much you need
Molybdenum is part of four enzymes that break down aromatic aldehydes, sulphur amino acids and purines. A deficiency has been described only once, in a patient on long-term intravenous feeding; no one has observed it in healthy people.1
2Where to find it
Molybdenum is in almost all foods. Pulses, cereals, offal and nuts have the most; people in Europe get it mainly from cereals and bread.1
3Absorption
In the EU, supplements may contain molybdenum as ammonium, potassium or sodium molybdate.5
4When it is too much
In the experiment with young men, intakes of 22–1,500 µg a day for 24 days were safe.3
