In a nutshell
- Unlike BCAAs, EAAs contain all 9 essential amino acids that muscles need for protein synthesis.1,7
- For people eating enough protein, even 10 g of extra leucine a day added nothing to muscle growth or strength.2
- In older people, protein and EAA supplements may help muscles slightly, but high-quality studies have not confirmed it yet.3
1What EAAs are
There are nine essential amino acids: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Three of them — leucine, isoleucine and valine — make up BCAAs, which have their own article.
2Do they help muscles?
3EAA or protein?
For building muscle, 1.4–2.0 g of protein per kilo of body weight a day is enough for most athletes — from food or from protein powder.1
